B. K. S. Iyengar, DK Books
First published in 2001 and written by the most well-known yoga master in the West, B.K.S. Iyengar, Yoga: The Path to Holistic Health brings familiarity to Western readers.
Filled with glossy, bright, colorful photographs, there are visual steps to each asana accompanied by detailed descriptions. As Iyengar places great emphasis on alignment, the tips given are particularly useful. Some benefits and contraindications are also listed for the positions.
The asanas are progressive, making the book accessible to a beginner as well as intermediate and advanced practitioners. A few of the most widely known asanas are selected from each group: standing, sitting, forward bends, backward bends, twists, inversions, and reclining positions.
A separate section on ailments illustrates the use of various props to modify positions. These positions are best done under the supervision of a teacher. Getting in and out of positions using multiple props can be challenging and may increase risk of injury. Each position may require different adjustments and props.
The book ends in a 20-week yoga course, taking out the guesswork from putting together a program.
